THE ANNUAL FUND: A LANDMARK MOVE
The challenges and uncertainty of the Pandemic coincided with major transitions at John Dewey Academy. These changes bring exciting new opportunities for our school. Although we have been fortunate to have received sufficient donor support to keep us moving forward through this school year, we will need significant financial help from you to continue to grow and flourish in the next calendar year…
Tuition alone does not cover costs
When ownership of our school passed to David Baum, PhD (in May 2020) he reorganized it from a private-operating, founder-funded school to an independent, self-sustaining one. Dewey received its formal designation as a non-profit from the IRS on November 2, 2020. Like all non-profit schools, tuition alone does not cover costs. To educate all of our students, pay our faculty’s salaries and fund our operating expenses, JDA now relies heavily upon tuition -as well as your generosity- to continue to build on the success we have enjoyed for the past 35 years. As a school committed to diversity, we also have need of a Scholarship Fund so families of limited means can also benefit from our ability to empower bright -but underachieving adolescents- to overcome social, emotional and academic challenges, attend quality colleges and lead healthy, productive, successful lives.
Moving from One Landmark to Another
In July 2021, we will move from the iconic Searles Castle to Cassilis Farm – – a unique 130-year-old landmark in New Marlborough, MA. Our new campus is potentially everything we could have hoped for in a new residence. It is spacious, elegant and sound; a historic estate offering an enticing combination of elegant architectural details, beautiful landscapes, breathtaking views -and- an impressive past that includes visits from John Lennon and Yoko Ono. But it is not yet a school. To transform Cassilis Farm, from a private residence into the new home of John Dewey Academy will involve considerable expense. We urge you all to make whatever commitment you possibly can to help support this endeavor. We need your help to ensure that Dewey will be here 35 years from now -and beyond- so we can continue our essential work in transforming struggling teens to successful ones.
We will keep you appraised of our fundraising progress. Please keep checking in and do whatever you can to help us get to our goal. Thank you!
