The John Dewey Academy is housed in the historic and beautiful Searles Castle in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Completed in 1888 at a cost of $2.3 million and modernized eighty years later, Searles Castle was designed by Sanford White and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Located on sixty-three acres of private land nestled in the Berkshire Hills, the main building includes administrative offices, common areas, kitchen and dining hall, music hall, group room, classrooms, the science lab, the art studio, the library, the weight room, laundry facilities, and living space. A second building houses additional classrooms and living space,
as well as an apartment for house parents. Athletic facilities include a tennis court, basketball court, playing field, running trails, and a small indoor gym facility with machines and free weights.
The John Dewey Academy is within walking distance of the center of Great Barrington, where students can enjoy coffee shops, restaurants, a movie theater, a library, and many local shops. It is also located minutes from Fairview Hospital.
